Dr. Mahdi Al-Sahlawi, a lecturer at the Faculty of Medicine, the UOK, participated in a research project carried out by four Iraqi universities, in collaboration with the Ministry of Environment, to study the effect of Volatile Ashes on the Iraqi environment.
Dr. Al-Sahlawi confirmed that the project is implemented by four Iraqi universities (Kufa, Mustansiriya, Diyala and Wasit) in addition to Swedish and Jordanian universities, with the cooperation of the Iraqi Ministry of Environment. It is a strategic project lasting for three years and is the first of its kind in the Middle East. The aim of the project centers around studying the source, the impact, and the possibility of treating Volatile Ashe after its deposition at the bottom of water bodies, lakes and marshes over the past years. The Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research, Prof. Ali Al-Adeeb, and the Minister of Environment, Eng. Sarkon Lazar, praised the efforts and support while pointing towards the trend of implementing future research that addresses many of the environmental problems that have plagued Iraq.
