The Faculty of Archeology and Heritage at the UOK organized a scientific excursion for its third year students to the historical Tharb Castle located within the administrative borders of Gamas district in Diwaniyah province. The students listened to an explanation by one of the supervisors there about the castle which dates back to the Ottoman era, stressing that it consists of several rooms, a courtyard and a center containing water fountains. The castle is surrounded by huge walls that are supported by half cylindrical towers. It was built of bricks and its outside walls contain several geometric decorations. The source also mentioned that Tharb Castle is one of the Ottoman castles which has lasted for about 250 to 300 years, and it was a present from the Ottomans to one of Al-Kazail tribe leaders at that time called (Tharb), so it became known in his name.
