Summary: A flavonoid compound was isolated from oak plant (Quercus infectoria oliv.) (Fagaceae) stem barks using ethanol alcohol as a solvent, the isolated compound was identified using conventional characterization methods, such as Thin Layer Chromatography(TLC),Ultraviolet-Visible (UV-Vis) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy(FT-IR), as well as, some biochemical assays using color reagents.

Antibacterial activity of extracted flavonoid was carried out against two types of reference strains bacteria: which are Gram positive bacteria (Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 25923) and Gram negative ( Escherichia coli ATCC 25923), the results shows that the extract of oak barks has good a antibacterial growth activity in which gram positive bacteria are more susceptible to the oaks extract than Gram negative (31 mm and 19mm, respectively).

Summary: We present and evaluate the actinomycin-production assay, a bacterial test for detecting DNA-damaging agents. It’s a simple test based on the activity of the agents against actinomycin antibiotic production of Streptomyces antibioticus, bacteria whose value is monitored by the inhibition activity of E. coli and S.aureus bacterial growth using two standard anticancer drugs cisplatin and flurouracil. In this assay, production of actinomycin antibiotic is measured as a specific indication of the ability of an agents to directly or indirectly damage DNA and that are of potential interest in carcinogenesis and cancer chemotherapy.

Because in vivo tumor test systems using mammalian cell cultures were slow and expensive, we tested a novel cytotoxicity test, simple, sensitive, inexpensive and amenable to large-scale screening using bacteria cultures, as well as, it will offer another practical application in addition to cytotoxicity screening, the assay is used for testing antibacterial of the test compounds..

Abstract:

Extracts from ginger plant rhizomes (Zingiber officinale) were isolated using methanol, ethanol, hexanol, butanol, chloroform and water solvents.

The antibacterial activity in vitro was conducted by the agar disk diffusion method against two types of reference strains of bacteria ( Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli) .

Ginger extracts showed various levels of inhibitory effects against test bacteria. The most potent extract was alcoholic especially ethanolic extract ( 33,17 ) mm against S. aureus and E. coli respectively. The lower inhibition zone of 7 mm was observed for chloroform extract on S. aureus and none effective for E. coli bacteria. All these results may be , in part, due to potent active materials of ginger plant.
