School of Biological Sciences – Faculty of Science – University of Kufa held Specific Scientific Symposium “Application of The Genetic Treatment and its Future’s Role”. The main objective of this symposium is to define the principle of the genetic treatment and its applications to treat various diseases and in the production of useful drugs and hormones. Prof. Dr. Merza Hamza al-Mershade, group or researchers, lecturers and students attended this scientific activity. The venue of this event was Ebn Al-Bettar Theatre in the Faculty of Science main building.
Prof. Dr Merza Hamza al-Mershade, the Dean of the College, opened the symposium with a speech in which he stressed ” the size and the magnitude of the challenges facing the entire world alike in dealing with genetic diseases. This requires very well developed program and plan to meet these challenges. Also he pointed out the importance of understanding the secrets of genes in achieving significant benefits. This could include the production of biomaterials and hormones that are useful for humans as well as to identify the genetic structure of any individual and his susceptibility to genetic diseases.
The session began with Dr. Nawfal Hussein Khudair’s lecture entitled (the concept of gene therapy). In his lecture Dr Nawfal explained the concept of the gene and noting that any change in the sequence of the gene causing hereditary diseasesز He pointed out the use of gene therapy in the treatment of genetic diseases and cancer and the advantages and the disadvantages of this treatment. The second lecture was delivered by Dr. Zuhair Al-Leban from the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Kufa, titled (applications of gene therapy). He also pointed out the details of some cases treatment by gene therapy in the United States pointing to successful attempts, and the other which did not succeed in this area. Dr. Karim Talib ended the symposium sessions by his lectured titled ‘ The relationship between drugs and the genetic content”. Dr Talib provided an explanation for the pharmaceutical industry on the basis of the relationship between Drug and the content of genetic. In conclusion the recommendations of the seminars are to emphasis on activating scientific research in the field of gene therapy and work to create a central laboratory specialist. Also attendees proposed that a number of researchers and specialists should be trained abroad in order to gain experience. Such training program should take place in the most developed countries in the world.
