 Structure:

The Informatics Center for Research and Rehabilitation has the following suggested departments:

1-AI Department

2- Networks and Communications Department

3-Software Department that comprises

a. Web Division

b. Software Research Division

c. Database Division

4-Trainig Department

5-Computer Department that comprises

a. e-learning  Division

b. Maintenance Division

Tasks and Functions of Departments:

 

1- AI Department  

The artificial intelligence (AI) is one of the highly sophisticated and diverse science fields since a wide range of topics and researches can be covered by this label.

For the purpose of having professional and carefully done work, this Department will have certain topics to start with, then it will pursue a periodical and capability if available –related process of expansion.

The main functions of this dept. will be:

1- Conducting researches on (soft computing) field; since it is one of the most widely spread topics with great opportunity of hitting diversified fields of specialization.

2- Conducting researches on the field of natural languages, particularly, the Arabic language, which lacks extended studies in this respect.

3- Conducting researches on the field of expert systems that will have great impact on the service provided to the society and the university.

4-therotical and practical researches will be done on the robotics, due to the rarity of such researches within this high technological field in Iraq.

Department of Networks and Communications:                                

Tasks assigned to the Department of Networks and Communications will be divided into two major kinds; service part and scientific part

First, scientific part: where the department will concentrate on scientific research on the following areas:

  1. Doing researches in the field of network security and information transferred via those networks.
  2. Doing researches in the field of communications area, this is a very large highly sophisticated area.
  3. Conducting researches on soft engines.
  4. Conducting researches to develop technologies employed in networks, data transfer, and storage of information.

Second, service part: the following fields will be the main concern:

  1. Maintaining the internet of the university and the servers.
  2. Studying the fiber optics project that the center aspires to employ inside the university.
  3. Studying and applying (VIOP) Project that will provide the whole of the university buildings with free phone calls service.
  4. Installing and maintaining surveillance cams inside the university.

Department of Software: this department has three main divisions:

First, Software Research Division: this division's major task is doing scientific researches in the IT field within the following topics:

1.      Researches of digital image processing and recognition systems.

2.      Processing sound and digital signals.

3.      Researches on Biometrics.

4.      Researches on Bioinformatics.

5.      Researches on medical services -related software.

Second, Data Bases Division: the Division of Data Bases major concern is conducting scientific researches in the Data Bases field as well as pursuing some applicative jobs, including, designing data bases for the benefit  of the university.

Third, Web Division:   this vital division will be interested in both scientific research in the field of web technologies and software and the service part, which includes:

1.      Mastering and maintaining the university's server on the internet.

2.      Mastering and maintaining the university's email server.

3.      Building database supported websites.

4.      Building e-management systems (e-government)

5.      Making technical designs including logos, posters, signs, and brochures in addition to the making of children-oriented-educational cartoons.

  

Department of Training:

The training dept. aims to hold training courses on the field of various levels IT as well as to rehabilitate and train staffs of the center, university, and the society in general on different fields of scientific specializations of IT.

The dept. is also responsible for developing training curricula and providing works on the various topics in relation to IT in addition to developing exam mechanisms and instructional aids.

Computer Department:

This department is of a service nature, although there are several ways in which it can tackle the scientific research. It has three divisions:

a. e-library Division:  it takes over the following tasks:

  1. It works on establishing digital libraries for different colleges of the university to facilitate the process of indexing, researching, and registering in order to cope with the Informatics progress. The division also provides e-books for students and teachers in all scientific and human fields in such a way that they would be accessible to the university website.
  2. Documenting and saving theses and dissertations electronically and publishing them on the university website.
  3. Providing video lectures in all specializations
  4. Managing, registering, and archiving video conferences
  5. Helping researchers by supplying them with scientific materials needed in doing researches.

Iraqi universities lack a good program to apply to the e-learning; thus, this division has taken over the task of providing a base for the e-learning. In cooperation with software department, a project for developing programs which will support the e-learning will be started and there would be researches conducted in this field.

The e-books that have been provided so far are 28000 books and the video lectures are 500 lectures.

b. Maintenance Division:  

This division works on maintaining computer systems and all e-devices of the university. It also supports the network division in maintaining the internet network.

We hope that this division would have a role in manufacturing a robot for the University of Kufa in collaboration with the AI division.

b. Intranet network, that links all colleges of the university, belongs to the Informatics Center for Research and Rehabilitation.

-Building that have:

  • 4 teaching halls
  • Furnished rooms for employees
  •  And a videoconferencing hall.

Scientific Research Plan:

The number of the planning researches numbered 25 researches dealing with the following:

a.      Researches about using computers in Medicine.

b.      Researches about Data mining.

c.       Researches about Biometrics.

d.      Robot researches.

e.       Network researches

In addition to many other researchers in other specialization fields.

Planned Projects:

There are many futuristic researches to be done in 2010 at the Informatics Center for Research and Rehabilitation.

These will concentrate on:

a.      The e-government projects of the University of Kufa.

b.      Projects of managing libraries and e- libraries.

c.        Projects in the field of e-learning.

d.       Network Projects

e.       Projects in the field of web.

f.       Database projects.
