Abstract
Teenage Pregnancy is a social health problem that lead to serious maternal complications and adverse outcome. Across- sectional descriptive study was carried out at AL-Zahraa Teaching Hospital in AL-Najaf City, from November 1st , 2015 until February 2nd, 2017, to assess the complications of pregnancy and outcome among teenager and to find out the association between Sociodemographic characteristics and complications of pregnancy.
A non–Probability (Purposive Sample) of (200) teenage primegravida mother aged from 13-19 years old, admitted to delivery room during this study. All women received standard labor management including history and complete general obstetrical examination for the presence of any pregnancy complications and followed for the mode of delivery and neonatal outcome.
The data were collected by using a questionnaire, they consist of nine parts: 1st part is the Sociodemographic data. The 2nd part about past medical history that consists of (8) items. The 3rd part deals with Reproductive health; puberty, family planning, and infertility treatment. The 4th part is about antenal health care visit and tetanus toxiod. The 5th part deals with nutritional supplement .Part 6th complications of pregnancy that consists of (9) items. The 7th part Mode of delivery, the 8th part Indications of Cesarean Section, the 8th part about Fetal Outcome.
Consistency of the questionnaire was resolute by a pilot study and the validity by using a panel of (12) experts. The documents were designated statistically and investigated through descriptive and inferential statistic used to analysis data.
The present study findings designated that most teenage pregnant mothers were non educated , lived in urban with extended family, suffesient to some extent and with past medical diseases( Recurrent urinary tract infection). Most teenage pregnant mothers neglected the antenatal care and complicated with anemia, the mode of delivery in most teenage pregnancies were vaginal deliveries without complications during delivery of term baby with normal birth weight and a significant association between Sociodemographic statistics and complications of pregnancy.
The study referes that the majority of the teenage pregnant mothers were illiterate and housewives. The majority of teenage pregnancies within suffesient to some extent and past medical diseases ( Recurrent urinary tract infection). Most of teenage mothers neglected the antenatal care, risk of anemia and low were higher among teenage pregnant mothers. Also this study referes to a strong relationship between Sociodemographic data and Complications of pregnancy.
The researcher recommends confirming on pregnant teenager to have appropriate antenatal care to avoid medical problems during pregnancy. Educational programs should be emphasized to pregnant teenage mothers for increasing their knowledge about pregnancy.
