Background: asthma is multifactorial disorder, many researches have reported relationship between different allergic asthma and HLA class II alleles, the aims of the current study were to clarify the relationship between allergic asthma and HLA-DRB1 alleles, to compare the results with normal control, and to determine the possible association of HLA-DRB1 alleles with serum level of total IgE.
Patients and Methods: a case-control study included 42 adult patients with allergic asthma and 42 normal control. All patients were diagnosed to have allergic asthma on the basis of clinical history and examination and all were positive to at least to one of the common tested allergens by skin prick test, HLA-DRB1 genotypes in patients and controls were done by using Histospot system and serum level of total IgE were measured by Chemiluminescence immunoassay..
Results: the frequencies of HLA-DRB1*07, DRB1*03, and DRB1*04, were higher among allergic asthmatic adult patients in comparison to control and these alleles were significantly associated with high serum IgE levels while HLA-DRB1*11 and DRB1*13 alleles were associated with low serum level of total IgE.
Conclusion: HLA-DRB1*07, DRB1*03, and DRB1*04 alleles might be the possible genetic factors for susceptibility of allergic asthma and serum IgE production in Iraqi adult patients with allergic asthma.
