Dr. Hassanein Mahdi Ahmed Al-Sabari, from the Faculty of Medicine at the UOK, conducted a corneal transplantation which was the first of its kind in Najaf and Southern Iraq. Dr. Al-Sabari explained that the biggest challenge was to bring the corneal tissue, from international banks in the US, into Iraq after obtaining approvals from the Iraqi Ministry of Health to enter the tissue. He noted that the Ministry of Health is currently sending patients outside Iraq to conduct this type of operation.
The patient who underwent the operation, 14-year-old Rasul Sultan from Diwaniyah province, was suffering from conical cornea disease at a very advanced level. His eyesight level reached two meters only, but three days after the operation it reached a 90% normal level and he is now under constant observation.
